Knowing Child Nutritional Status

Nutritional status of children is an important thing to be known by each parent. Need for more attention on growth and development based on the fact that the age of the children malnourished that occurred in this golden period, is irreversible (can not be recovered).

Data in 2007 showed 4 million Indonesian children under five are malnourished, 700 thousand of them suffered severe malnutrition. Meanwhile, those who received supplementary food program is only 39 thousand children.

Viewed from the heights, as much as 25.8 percent of Indonesian children under five short (SKRT 2004). Body size is short this is a sign of prolonged malnutrition. Furthermore, malnutrition can affect brain development in children. In fact, the brain grows during infancy. Rapid phase of brain growth takes place from fetal age 30 weeks until the baby is 18 months.

According to nutrition experts from the IPB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Khomsan Ali, MS, a standard reference for nutritional status of children is a Weight Loss by Age (BB/U), Weight Loss according to height (weight/height), and Height by Age (TB/U). While the classification is normal, underweight (thin), and fat.

For reference that uses height, if the conditions are less well known stunted (short). Guidelines used are based on standard tables WHO-NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics).

Nutritional status of children can know how to match * with the child's age (in months) with standard weight tables WHO-NCHS, if the weight is less, the less its nutrient status.

In the IHC (Integrated Service Post), has provided the Card Towards Healthy (KMS) which can also be used to predict the nutritional status of children based on KMS curve. Consider first the child's age, weight and then plot the curve of the KMS. If still within the green line then good nutritional status, if below the red line, then the status of malnutrition.

The difference with young children, the nutritional status of adults using the reference body mass index (BMI) or also called the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI value is obtained by calculating the weight (in kilograms) divided by height squared (in square meters). Normal BMI score between 18.5 and 25; skinny when less than 18.5, and obese if over 25. For example, 1.6 meters tall person, then the ideal weight is 48-64 kg.

How to Detect Malnutrition in children under five years

Tool Time Tuesday...Flexible Tubing

Happy Tuesday! It was very busy here last week. I thought I was going to post sooner about different things, but Tuesday pops up before you know it.
space
I'm so happy to share this week's TTT with you though.
space
See this package of plastic tubing below...well, I've had this in my Tool Time idea box forever. I found it in Home Depot (where else, right?) It was super cheap. I think $2.00 for this package of 7 feet. It is split flexible tubing found in the electrical section. It's used to bundle wires to keep them neat. That's the reason why I bought it, because this stuff is so expensive in Staples...$12.00-$15.00 for 6 feet.
space
space
Here's a close up of the label. It's already split the length of the tubing and it's very easy to cut the desired length you need with regular scissors.
space
space
This one is 1/2" diameter, but they do come in different sizes.
space
space
and it's very easy to open up the split.
space
space
Here's what I use it for...bundling all those crazy wires behind the computer.
space

space
You can also slip it over the handle of shopping bags to keep the bags closed and it also makes it easier to carry without the handles digging into the palm of your hand...you know with the weight of all your purchases in there!
space

Also works if you have 2-3 bags. Just slip all the handles in the tubing and all the bags stay together...

even when you put them down.

space
These are the only 2 ideas I could think of for this tubing. It would still be in my idea box if it weren't for my new blogging friend Diana from Didiblog. Diana is from Spain and she emailed me a few days ago wanting to share her idea for bobbins that I think is just FABULOUS. It uses this plastic tubing, so she wanted to share it with me for Tool Time Tuesday. Isn't she so sweet for thinking of me. When I saw this idea all I could say was I LOVE IT!! I emailed her and she gave me permission to use all the pictures below from her blog.
space
Look at this idea...it's the best. Just open up the slit in the tubing and slide the bobbins in. Keeps them from unraveling and they don't fall out...it's great for traveling to a class or to a retreat too.

Such a great way to keep them all together and organized.

Look how cute this box is!!

and look at this...It's a bobbin donut!

Her blog is in Spanish, but if I understood it correctly, these are CD's they covered to make this adorable holder. (Oh my gosh, I hope that's right) Love it so much!

Thank you very much Diana for letting me share this wonderful idea with everyone. This is just another reason why I love blogging!
space
Please go visit Diana's blog Didiblog. Even though you may not understand Spanish, her blog is fantastic and the pictures are explanation enough. Such inspiration!

Have a great Tuesday,
~Karen~

Tool Time Tuesday...Sew Many Sewing Kits

Happy Tuesday...The motto of TTT is to think outside the box. Well, today I literally want you to think outside the box. Boxes, containers and of course trash are all part of today's post.
space
I am showing you different boxes and containers that we all might have in our homes right now. The pictures below are for sewing kits that you can keep in your purse or beside your favorite sewing chair. However, you can always use these ideas for other things in your life...not just for sewing. The kits can be used for make-up, little snack or craft kits for children or grandchildren, first aid kits etc. You name it...there's a place to put it.
space
The first container I found in Burger King. Picture this scenario...My hubby and I are sitting at the table in Burger King across from each other. He's eating his favorite chicken sandwich and I'm eating a salad (trying to shed those winter pounds before I have to put on those shorts that are mocking me in the drawer.) When I saw this container, which holds the salad on the bottom and all the fixings in the compartments on top, my first thought (out loud by the way) was...Oh my gosh this is too cute! (I really think I need trash therapy.) This is a sewing kit if I ever saw one. His words...please don't take that home. Too late.

How about a pencil box!!! They come in so many different sizes and colors.

This is an old tool or tackle box. It's small enough to carry around any where.

Another attempt to lose weight is Lean Cuisine...woo hoo frozen food containers. The possibilities are endless with these! Little compartments every where.

Perfect by your favorite chair.

How about a travel soap box for a kit in your purse. This would make a great first aid kit box as well as a sewing kit.

Eye glass cases...they're already in your purse anyway...why not add another one for a kit.

This is a lipstick case that my mother-in-law gave me. It was free with a purchase!!!

This is an old camera case...who knew!

This is a holder for memory sticks for your computer and a bonus key chain.

There are two little compartments on either side for the sticks.

How about thread on one side and scissors on the other. The middle fabric is perfect for needles and pins.

Perfect!

and this last one is any container that you find that can be transformed with fabric or pretty paper. The Tim Horton's mini donut box was a TTT post in the past, but how cute is that to carry around as a sewing kit. I'm working on that Chinese food take out box for a future post.

Have a fantastic Tuesday and remember to always think twice when you see a box! What do you use for a sewing kit?
~Karen~
