Super Fast Last Minute Gift Idea...No Sew Scarf !!
space
Here's my daughter modeling the black scarf...

and here's the brown one.
space

The fabric comes in so many colors...

You can find it in the fleece section. It is unbelievably soft, silky, furry and so warm around your neck.

You can make them any width. The black is 5 inches wide and the brown is 7 inches wide. The size is all up to you.

I didn't have any full yardage left to lay out and show you the steps, but its very easy to do...ALL YOU DO IS RIP IT AND IT"S DONE!!
- I bought the silky furry fleece at Joann's in the fleece department. (It looks like Elmo fur,but in different colors!)
- You can get it on sale sometimes for $7-$8 per yard
- Buy the yardage you need, but buy extra to clean up the edge of the fabric before you rip it...yes, rip it!!
- Completely unfold fabric and lay it out so one selvage edge is close to you and the other is at the other end. The wrong side is up.
- To clean or straighten the left edge of the fabric, make a snip through the selvage (or finished edge) about 2" over and then RIP IT! Just pull both pieces of the snipped fabric and it will tear clean up to the other selvage edge. You might have to cut that last bit with scissors.
- Now you have a clean straight edge, determine the width of you scarf (5"-6" wide), snip the selvage edge and rip, rip rip. Do it fast!
- The fur will be flying, so you might want to do this outside or in the basement. You'll be swearing at me for this messy part, but it's worth it!
- Because this is a version of fleece, the ripped edges don't fray and the selvage edges are already finished.
- Just snip, rip, shake the excess fur and you are done!!
The picture below shows the selvage edges of the black and the brown scarves. The left and right sides where it was ripped automatically rolls itself to finish it.

I'm showing you this piece of red furry fabric to show you what went wrong last year with this fabric. Hopefully you can look out for this when you are shopping for the fabric. This is the piece I had left.

Very pretty in person...great for Christmas!

but here's where it went wrong...the person who cuts the fabric, cut it crooked or the straight of grain was woven crooked. Can you see how the lines start to go off to the left from the selvage edge on the bottom?

When I started to cut the 6 inch wide scarf on the right, see the woven lines to the left...they are running almost diagonal. When you snip and then start to rip, it will follow that diagonal line. Now your scarf will be 6 inches on one end and about 2 inches on the other!!! I'm laughing at the thought of that now, but when I was making 40 of these the night before my ladies party...it wasn't so funny. I had a few choice words for Elmo when I was cutting this red fabric, LOL

Here's another picture of the crooked fabric and what not to buy.

This is how I packaged each scarf for gifts the past 2 years. Add a little bell or ornament to the bow and it's all set.

Tool Time Tuesday...Is Your Sewing Machine Drafty?
space
Even though I have a 1/4" presser foot, I still like a guide further down on the table so I can chain piece faster.

So I saw this on my husband's work bench. We needed to buy some to seal up the back door from drafts. We have 2 sizes, one wide and thick and one narrow and thin. For this Tool Time, I used the narrow thin kind. It's 3/8" wide and 5/16" tall.
space

This package came with 2 rolls with a total of 20 feet for $3.00. I don't know about your sewing machine, but mine only needed about 6 inches, so when you buy a package, share it with a sewing friend!!! You can find this in any hardware store.

The tape is sticky on one side and is black. The white paper is on there so it won't stick to itself on the roll.

The first step is to take off old tape...urrrgh....I wanted to cry!!

but Goof Off to the rescue. I love this stuff. Test it first if you haven't used it before. It removes every sticky thing you can think of.

See...nice and clean. (those marks on the bottom of the picture are scratches on the plastic)

Cut the piece of foam insulation to your desired length,

peel off the white paper...the foam is really sticky.

Place straight edged ruler to where your 1/4" seam allowance is ( or any seam allowance measurement),

I squared the top of the ruler with the throat plate of the machine so it would be perpendicular and straight all the way down.

Line up the foam strip with the straight edge of the ruler and stick it in place.

Now you are all set for a nice 1/4" seam guide all the way down your table top. This picture looks a little wonky, but it's where I squeezed the foam.

This is the perfect thickness for guiding the fabric next to.

Sew a test piece first and measure for an accurate 1/4" seam allowance before you begin to sew a project. Hope this helps and just a FYI...there is a little sticky residue from this, but not as bad as the tape that you saw above. We had 2 different brands of this tape and this thin one left a little when I lifted it up, but the other didn't leave anything. In fact, it was very easy to reposition it over and over for different seam sizes. Just give it a try, but test it first.

Thought I would leave you with a few pictures of the blizzard that hit us this past weekend in southern New England. This measurement of 18" was in the middle of the storm, so I think we ended up with a little more.

This is my favorite picture. The dark car is the front of my husband's Jeep and the little spot of gray and the antenna is my Honda van completely buried.

Tool Time Tuesday...Magnetic Board
space
First, I have to share this week's Tool Time. It's from the hardware store again. I really need to get a part time job there!!
space
I found this frame in a consignment shop for $10.00. It's a big one 24 x 33. I took out the ugly picture and added this piece of metal and Woo Hoo, I have a great new magnet board for over my desk. See below for the quick steps

Here is the piece of metal. Don't ask for "Sheet Metal" because that is super expensive...some were $40 a sheet. Go to the metal chimney or roof venting section. The pieces came in 2 sizes. This one was the largest 24" x 36" and they were only $5.00 and $7.00 each.
space

Find your frame,

The width of mine fit perfectly,

but the length needed to be cut, so just mark it with a pencil (sorry so blurry)

Draw a line with a pencil and a straight edge.

pencil works the best.

This is soooooo important. PLEASE wear leather gloves when trimming the metal with tin snips. It is so sharp and can cut you very easily. I'm not sure if you brought in the measurements if they would cut it for you at the store...worth a try!!

It does cut smoothly, just hold up the piece you are cutting away on the left. Hold it up as you go.

Put the back on the frame and fold over the wires if you have them. I didn't so I used framing points.

These little triangle thingies.

Just poke them into the frame.

Tap them in,

and it holds everything in tightly.

Here's the frame all done!!!

I glued button to magnets..see the little black button, too cute.

I also glued old sewing machine bobbins to the magnets...even the thread is still on

Here's a little extra tip...how about using a tape measure for a bow, great for a little wreath in your sewing room.

This was a fast project, but so handy to hold up notes, patterns, to do list, pictures, bills, mail, coupons, invitations etc. This would be great any where in your home too. Give it a try!!!
